Question:
How often should I weigh myself?
Answer:
You need to weigh often enough to keep motivated while you are trying
to lose weight. For most people weighing once a week is enough to see
progress while avoiding playing "games" with the scale. Choose one day
of the week and a time for weighing. Keep a log of your weekly
weights. You can graph your progress over time. It is tempting to
weigh yourself one or more times a day, but don't. Your weight
fluctuates with the amount of water in your system. When you weigh too
often, you can convince yourself that you gained more weight eating a
big salad and drinking a 20-oz glass of water than eating a few high-
calorie extras. The salad and 20-oz serving of water may show up as a
pound or two on the scale, but that weight will be water not body fat.
You need to eat 500 calories extra every day to gain a pound every
week. After you get to your weight goal, monitor your weight. Set a 2-
to 5-pound weight cushion. When your weight creeps up by 2 pounds,
it's like the yellow traffic signal. Time to monitor your food intake
and physical activity more closely and go back to the strategies that
helped you lose weight.
